Wardrobe of a Modern Woman
Project type
Fiber arts and Performance
Date
May 2021
The "Wardrobe of a Modern Woman" is a garment and performance art piece titled "The More You Know." This piece highlights the laws that the US government has placed on a woman’s body and the belief that these laws are necessary to protect women from themselves. The inner dress features a more traditional silhouette, while the outer skirt is made up of various abortion laws in America. Each bill is annotated to point out misnomers, misused words, and misleading phrases.
The initial version of the performance was a video based on 1950s housewife tutorials. In the video, a female model gets ready while a male voice explains that she is not ready until she knows the laws that govern her body. The male voice discusses abortion laws and how they are intended to protect the naive girl from herself. As the video plays, hands reach in and disturb the girl.
